Soccer Meets Golf, Combines To Form New Sport
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Golf can be a pretty polarizing sport. People either seem to enjoy it or want to have nothing to do with it.
Now, as Mike Schuh reports, soccer meets golf and captures a whole new audience.
Soccer...played on a golf course?
The idea is so simple, an eight-year-old can explain.
"And if you like soccer and golf and don't know what to pick, pick both of them," said Brooke Busemi.
Both of them mashed together. Welcome to FootGolf.
"We just introduced FootGolf to McDaniel Golf Course," said golf pro Michael Diehl.
Eighteen holes mixed in with the regular course at McDaniel College, the only such course in Maryland. To make it easier, kids get a slightly smaller ball, but they all end up in a 21-inch cup. It's the same ratio of size from golf ball to golf hole as it is from soccer ball to FootGolf cup. The great thing is, no experience necessary.
"I'm not a very good golfer so I'm glad that there's a more fun version here that we can do, as well," said student Allison Karloff.
"It brings a lot more families and kids involved because of the sport of soccer being so popular," Diehl said.
Family-friendly is a phrase kicked around, but it really is applicable here. You don't have to be an athlete or the same age to play.
"The grandparents---we had five or four generations come out the other day and play in the same group," Diehl said. "My experience in golf: not everyone can hit a golf ball and they don't love the game because of that fact, but anyone that can walk on two legs can kick a soccer ball."
The cost is $10 for adults and $8 for kids. Reservations are required.
