Old Bay Releases Limited Can; Portion Of Proceeds Benefit Youth

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—The Cal Ripken, Sr, Foundation and Old Bay have teamed up to honor the 20th anniversary celebration of Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken, Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig's most consecutive games played record

Old Bay has designed a limited edition can and a portion of the proceeds from the sale will benefit Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation

WJZ's Tracey Leong explains how this is also benefiting our country's youth.

A percentage of the sales for these collectible cans go directly to our youth, providing them with the tools to succeed.

"OLD BAY is proud to call Baltimore home, and even prouder of the home teams and players that bring us together," said Raj Nar, OLD BAY Business Director. "We're excited to celebrate Cal Ripken, Jr.'s 2,131 anniversary while supporting the important work the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation does for youth across the country."

These kids are getting more than just a lesson on the field.

Lessons in perseverance, positive thinking, personal accountability and anti-bullying messages, said Steve Salem, President of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation.

A week of life changing experiences, both mentally and physically.

Badges for Baseball is part of the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation, which unites police officers with youth from all over the country for a summer camp.

"We've been bringing law enforcement and kids together in a positive way instead of the negative way, which is all they have known in their lives, on both the police and kids side, and now they're coming together in a positive way," said Salem

It's an invaluable opportunity for these officers and kids.

"I been an officer for over 10 years, a lot of time it was on the street and dealing with the kids in that aspect, nine times out of ten times it was negative," said Corporal Kwesi Dadzie, Prince George's Co. Police. "This aspect we are more preventative, we get the kids who might be on the cusp and teach them fundamentals, and make them productive citizens."

In order to operate these programs the foundation relies on donations and fundraising, which is where the Old Bay seasoning comes in.

A portion of the proceeds from the can will go directly to these camps.

Officials say only 48,000 cans will be produced; the bottom of each can will be numbered for collectability.

Cans will be available in stores across the Mid-Atlantic region, including Maryland, Virginia, District of Columbia, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and North Carolina beginning the week of August 17.

Fans are encouraged to celebrate the 20th anniversary with OLD BAY® and the Ripken Foundation by following along with the hashtag #OLDBAY2131 for a chance to win a Cal Ripken signed commemorative can.
