Many Excited At Chance To See Pope In DC

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- They are the hottest tickets in our area right now and, with less than two weeks until Pope Francis arrives, many are wondering how they can attend the DC mass led by the Holy Father.

Marcus Washington met some of the lucky few able to say they have tickets.

It came as a shock for the selected 10 at a Canton church but some we spoke with Monday say it is truly a dream turned reality.

It's more than a week away from his arrival and everyone is still talking about Pope Francis' upcoming visit.

"We were invited to have 10 people from our parish, Hispanic members, to be present," said Father Robert Wojtek, Sacred Heart of Jesus. "Well, first of all, I thought, `This could be a headache.' How do you choose 10 people out of thousands?"

"I've been chosen to go to Mass and see Pope Francis. There are not words to explain," said Melissa Pelaez.

Pelaez is one of the blessed 10 that will get to see the Pope during the DC Mass. The honor is also extra special because Pope Francis will perform the Mass entirely in Spanish.

"Spanish is my first language. English is my second. So to listen to Mass in my first language has a bigger excitement to it," Pelaez said.

"It's something we might not want to hear and there's a lot of people he may rub wrong," Father Wojtek said. "[I want to hear] the call to be authentic; the call for everybody to be the best they can."

As the countdown continues, the anticipation is sure to follow.

It will be a long day for anyone with tickets. They are asked to arrive between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Of course, the earlier you arrive, the better your potential view. There are no seats available. The Mass isn't scheduled to begin until 4:15.
