TOWSON, Md. (WJZ) — Towson University alumna Amy Schumer took home her first Emmy!
Tracey Leong spoke with Schumer’s former professor about the star’s time at the school.
Schumer even gave her alma mater a nod on the red carpet. Her professor says the theater major has always been a very proud graduate.
Schumer is setting the stage for Towson University students.
“I would like to be as successful as her,” said Kristen Fitzsimmons, Towson student.
“Just shows that no matter where you come from, you can still do really cool things,” said student Chris Jones.
Dr. Robyn Quick, chair of the Department of Theater Arts at Towson, is a huge fan of her former student.
“Very excited for her to have this wonderful path. I’m very proud of the work she does and how intelligent she is,” she said.
Since graduating in 2003, the Emmy winner has earned the title of America’s Sweetheart of Comedy, creating and starring in the series “Inside Amy Schumer,” which won Outstanding Varsity Sketch Series at the 67th Annual Emmy Awards.
The comedian gave a shout out to her alma mater on the red carpet. As a theater major, Schumer spent countless hours at the Towson University theater on and off stage, perfecting her craft.
“Amy knows what she cares about. She knows what she wants to say and developed her craft in a way that has allowed her to share it with the world,” Quick said.
The star’s success boosting Towson University’s reputation.
“I think they have it in a higher regard now. They’re like, `Oh, wow, Towson, I know that, I’ve heard of that,'” Fitzsimmons said. “Now it’s like, `I want to go there.'”
And inspiring the next generation of students.
“Cool to see someone who went to the same place I am doing things on a national level,” said Chris Jones, Towson student.
Amy Schumer has returned to campus since graduating to perform comedy shows for the students. There’s no word if the Emmy winner will be coming again any time soon but students are staying hopeful.
