Maryland Health Officials Report Season's 1st Cold Death

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland health officials are reporting the state's first death related to hypothermia this season.

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene announced Wednesday that a Kent County man with underlying medical conditions between the ages of 45 and 64 died at the end of November. Officials say no additional details will be released, to protect his family's privacy.

There were 41 hypothermia-related deaths in Maryland during the 2014-2015 winter weather season. Dr. Howard Haft, deputy secretary for public health services, says people who are homeless, have substance use disorders or underlying health conditions and the elderly are most at risk.
