Fundraiser Being Held To Preserve Fells Point Landmark

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Preservation efforts are underway in Fells Point for one of the city's oldest urban residence, dating back to the 1700's.

Ron Matz has more.

Built in 1965, when you walk into the Robert  Long house located on 812 South Ann St and you feel history in the making.

"There are very few colonial houses, maybe this and the Mt. Clare Mansion," said David Gleason, chairman of the 250th anniversary committee of the Robert Long house.

Gleason says there isn't too much biographical information about the Robert Long.

"We do know he came from southern Pennsylvania at an early age and came to make his fortune in Fells Point," said Gleason. "He was an entrepreneur. He had shipping and building interests here."

The Long house is a two and a half story colonial connecting visitors with the life of a man who worked on the Fells Point waterfront in the 18th century.

Gleason says, "it's not a big house, but for someone who was coming to Fells Point and looking to make his fortune here it was a very substantial house."

And part of a neighborhood with a rich history.

"It's important to realize that Fells Point has a history that goes back 250 years," Gleason said.

Sunday's fundraiser will be held at Second Chance on Ridgely Street. The event begins at 3:00 p.m.
