Most Maryland Counties Now Out Of Snow Days

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A snow day today could mean another school day in the summer. After having to use several snow days during January's blizzard, many districts are reaching their max.

Jessica Kartalija has more on how many snow days area schools have used so far this season.

Tuesday's snow day was certainly a headache for parents, who were initially told that schools were delayed---but it could be a headache for students this summer.

More snow means another snow day!

So far, Baltimore City has used six of its five alloted days. Howard County has used seven of its six days. Anne Arundel County has used three of their five days. Carroll County also planned for five and has used all of them. Baltimore County has used seven of their seven planned days and Harford County planned for 11 and has used six so far this season.

State law says students must be in school for 180 days a year. That breaks down into 1,080 instruction hours for elementary and middle schoolers and almost 1,200 hours for high school students.

That means most schools will continue through the second week of June.

If weather conditions push schools past their snow day max, schools can ask the state board of education to waive the 180-day requirement...but there's no guarantee the board will agree.
