Man From Baltimore Donates Millions To Restore Lincoln Memorial

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- David Rubenstein, a billionaire from Baltimore, donated $18.5 million to restore the Lincoln Memorial Monday.

The donation will expand educational resources, foster public access and repair and restore the memorial.

"These improvements will hopefully enable more people to better understand and appreciate Abraham Lincoln's remarkable leadership during one of the most trying periods in American history," David Rubenstein said. "I am humbled to be a part of honoring this great man and preserving this iconic memorial for future generations."

Rubenstein also donated millions to restore the Washington Monument after the earthquake, as well as donations to restore Arlington House (a Robert E. Lee Memorial) and the US Marine Corps War Memorial.

Rubenstein grew up in northwest Baltimore and graduated from City College.
