Ovechkin Penalized, Caps Still Win 3-2

During the game on Monday, Washington Capitals forward Alex Ovechkin earned a two-mintue penalty for "briefly" carrying a second stick on the ice.

It all happened when teammate Evgeny Kuznetsov lost his stick during the play and Ovechkin proceeded to pick it up and throw it to Kuznetsov. However, this was cause for a penalty.

According to rule 10.3 you're not allowed to throw, toss, slide or shoot a teammate's stick back to them after they have lost it during play.

Ovechkin could have handed Kuznetsov his (Ovechkin's) stick, or Kuznetsov could have gone to the bench and received one from a teammate, but as soon as he picked up Kuznetsov's and tried to throw it to him, that's a penalty.

Fortunately for the Capitals it didn't end up hurting them as they were able to hold on for a 3-2 win. The win is the Capitals' 44th of the season.

They are the first team in NHL history to ever win 44 of their first 58 games in a season.
