Health Initiative Aims To Empower Women, Put Their Health First

BALTIMORE (WJZ)—Diabetes is a serious problem here in Baltimore and around the country, but there's an effort to educate people, especially women.

Ron Matz has more on how "Fabulous You" is making Baltimore healthy.

They're making all the right moves to stop diabetes at Lexington Market a health fair is sounding the alert.

"This is our wake up call to the country," said David McShea, Executive Director ADA Maryland. "29 million Americans have diabetes and 86 million Americans have pre-diabetes, we're asking people to take the "Risk Test."

"Fabulous You" is an initiative aimed at women.

"Fabulous You is our women's initiative, it empowers women to put their health first, to make their health a priority so if they take care of their self, then they will take care of their family members," said Tracy Newsome, Dir Community Health ADA.

Terry Rice is one of 15 local women now healthier thanks to the program.

Energy from a healthier diet from "Reinvent U Boot Camp" is also at the health fair.

"It's just simple how people can take fruits and vegetables and combine it," said Frances Cuesta, with Reinvent U Boot Camp. "Actually it only takes a couple of minutes and its something healthy going into the body.

29 million Americans suffer from diabetes, including 600,000 people here in Maryland.
