Investigation Continues Into What Went Wrong After Cruise Ship Crashes

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A close call for a cruise ship at the Port of Baltimore caused serious damage to the cruise terminal this weekend.

Tracey Leong has an update on the investigation into what went wrong.

Tragedy averted at the Maryland cruise terminal when the Carnival Pride crashed into a walkway while docking.

Sky Eye Chopper 13 captured the wreckage left behind at the Port of Baltimore after the Carnival Pride struck the passenger bridge Sunday morning.

"Heard it like a crash and felt it and then heard something crashing from the outside, as well," said passenger Debbie Squires.

Passengers returning from the Bahamas felt the impact when the front of their ship hit the raised walkway, causing it to collapse on top of three parked cars owned by cruise employees. The cars and walkway were empty at the time and no one was injured.

The ship only sustained minor damage---an accident that could have been much worse.

"Very lucky no one got hurt," Squires said.

Passengers used another exit on the pier level and now the Maryland Port Authority is considering building a temporary walkway as the investigation continues into what went wrong.

"We're eager as much as Carnival and the Coast Guard to find out exactly what happened and to make sure this doesn't happen again," said Port of Maryland Spokesman Richard Scher.

Carnival Pride's schedule was not impacted by this crash. The next voyage went out as planned.

Carnival and Royal Caribbean both have home ports in Baltimore.
