Suspect In Shooting Near Md. Hospital Shoots Himself In Barricade Situation

ROSSVILLE, Md. (WJZ) -- The suspect who shot his ex-girlfriend near MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in the Rossville area has shot himself in a barricade situation, police say.

The Baltimore County Police Department has obtained an arrest warrant for 29-year-old Erwin Acree in Tuesday night's shooting near Franklin Square.

Police say Acree shot his ex-girlfriend, identified only as a janitor who works at the hospital, across the street from a bus stop at about 11:30 p.m. He then fled the scene.

"I would never think that someone would get shot right front of a hospital," said Travis Craig, bus rider. "But these days and times, you never know."

The victim's co-workers rushed over immediately to help. She was eventually transported to Shock Trauma with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.

"With the quick-thinking actions of Baltimore County EMS and then our partners in the region, she was stabilized, and I believe she's in better shape today," said Jonathan Hansen, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.

Franklin Square was placed on lockdown for a time. It was lifted around 3 a.m.

"We actually put a security guard at every doorway. The doors are locked. We allow people in and out as appropriate," said Larry Strasser, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.

Investigators say, later Wednesday, Acree barricaded himself inside an apartment in West Baltimore. Neighbors in the 100-block of Woodington Road were also confined to their homes.

"I came out the front door to go to my car, and the police told me to get back in the house," said neighbor Rick Jones.

After refusing to come out for several hours, police say Acree shot himself.

The 29-year-old suspect was transported to an area hospital for treatment. His current condition is not known at this time.

Acree faces a number of charges, including attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault.

The incident remains under investigation.
