Sharapova Suspended Two Years For Doping
BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Tennis player Maria Sharapova has been suspended for two years by the International Tennis Federation for testing positive for meldonium at the Australian Open.
Back in March, Sharapova announced to the media that she failed a drug test at the Australian Open, and the five-time champion was provisionally suspended by the ITF.
The ruling that she would be suspended was announced this morning, Wednesday, June 8. Her suspension can be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
Sharapova, a five-time major champion, is currently the 7th ranked player on the WTA tour.
