Machado Fined, Suspended 4-Games For Brawl; Ventura Gets 9

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- The punishment for Manny Machado has been handed down. The Orioles all-star has been suspended for four games and will have to pay a $2,500 fine.

The suspension comes after a bench-clearing brawl at Camden Yards, when Machado charged the mound after he was hit by a 99 mile-per-hour pitch.

Rick Ritter has more on the suspension for the Kansas City pitcher who hit Manny, and new reaction to Machado's punishment.

Drilled by a fastball, Manny Machado wasted no time charging Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura. The brawl Tuesday night took over sports highlights nationwide and dealt both players a costly suspension.

Major League Baseball hit Machado with four games and a $2,500 fine. Ventura was slapped with a nine game suspension. Both will appeal.

"They came up with the decision, and obviously, that's why we're going to appeal it and see what happens going on forward," Machado said.

Orioles manager Buck Showalter says he expects the process to be fair.

"It's just kind of tough that when you have to play short because of something that someone else kind of got going," he said.

Fans who spoke with WJZ say they're able to stomach Machado's four game suspension, but because Ventura's a pitcher, they believe his suspension should have been steeper.

"With a pitcher, he only pitches every four days. I'm thinking at least a month," said Jeff Schenning.

"For only nine games, he's only going to miss one start if they have their rotation correct," said Neil Esterson.

Former Oriole Rick Dempsey couldn't agree more.

"The nine days really isn't nine days at all, it's only one day, and Machado is going to be suspended for four days," he said.

Like the O's, Dempsey is hoping the league reconsiders during the appeals process.

"Does the league realize that Kansas City is going to get off the hook very easily with a guy who's really caused more than just trouble in Baltimore," said Dempsey.

Orioles outfielder Adam Jones has already offered to pay Machado's fine.

This is not the first time Manny Machado has been suspended. He sat out five games back in 2014 after intentionally throwing his bat against the Oakland Athletics.
