Amy Schumer and Will Ferrell Put Spotlight on Johns Hopkins Organization

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Famous comedians have created a video poking fun at a Johns Hopkins organization in order to spread awareness.

Most organizations choose names that are easy to remember, or at least easy to say. But one Baltimore organization has neither of those advantages, Alex DeMetrick reports.

Formerly known as the Johns Hopkins Programs of International Educational Gynecology, Jhpiego [JAH-PIE-GO] has found itself at the butt of the joke, but it's all in good fun, and for a good cause.

Your Favorite Comedians Can't Pronounce JHPIEGO by Funny Or Die on YouTube

On the website "Funny or Die,  Amy Schumer, Will Ferrell and other famous comedians purposely mangle the pronunciation of the complex acronym to spread awareness for the important organization, which was founded 42 years ago to increase maternal and newborn health and survival worldwide.

The cause caught the eye of the president of Comedy Central, who enlisted some of the biggest stars to help spread the word.

"It's really one of the most positive communications efforts we've ever had" according to Melody McCoy, Jhpiego's Vice President of External Relations and Communication, "[the video] really helps people appreciate our name more."

Jhpiego plans on sticking with the name and hopes it'll eventually catch on like "AFLAC" and "AARP."
