Cousin Charged With Parkville Woman's Murder

BALTIMORE, Md. (WJZ) -- A 91-year-old woman found dead in her Parkville home was murdered by her cousin, who staged a burglary to cover his tracks, authorities said Monday.

The body of Nadia Evanowicz Schaible was found lying on the basement floor of her Evergreen Drive home after 7 p.m. July 12, according to Baltimore County Police.

Her cousin, John Malko, 72, of Salt Lake City, Utah, said he had been visiting Schaible, but left at some point. When he returned, Malko told investigators, he found the home ransacked -- the kitchen door was broken and jewelry was scattered on the floor -- and his cousin's body downstairs.

An autopsy later determined Schaible died of blunt force trauma and her death was homicide, police said.

Investigators said evidence led them to suspect Malko killed her and then turned the home upside down to make it look like a home invasion gone wrong.

Malko is being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center on a charge of first-degree murder.
