Report: FOP Won't Scale Back Dues While Mosby's Around

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Paying for the legal defense of six Baltimore police officers charged in the arrest and death of Freddie Gray drained the city police union's coffers, officials told The Baltimore Sun.

In light of the costly trials, members agreed in a unanimous vote to raise their dues to nearly twice what they had paid previously.

But even though prosecutors decided to drop charges against remaining officers this week after three of them were acquitted, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 3 officials said they have no plans to scale back dues -- as long as Marilyn Mosby remains Baltimore's State's Attorney.

"Yes, we will continue the same dues structure because we expect Ms. Mosby to continue her inane, malicious prosecution of police officers simply for doing their job," union president Gene Ryan said, according to the Sun's report.

The union's decision marks the latest ripple in the fallout from the case. The union and Mosby's office have clashed in the public eye since the state attorney pursued charges against the officers after Gray was injured in police custody, and later died, back in May 2015.

Union officials, including Ryan, have repeatedly accused Mosby of "malicious prosecution" in the case, which the Sun reports cost the union $800,000 in legal fees. Following the acquittals, Ryan called for prosecutors to drop charges against the remaining officers.

Mosby, meanwhile, has stayed on message that police are directly to blame for Gray's death. The case cost her office $450,000, according to the Sun.
