'Serial' Alibi Witness Calls Claims She Said She Would Lie 'Nonsense'
BALTIMORE (WJZ/AP) -- Anyone who listened to the first season of the "Serial" podcast knows the name Asia McClain.
She's the woman who, had she been brought to testify in Adnan Syed's original trial for the murder of his classmate and ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, there may never have been a podcast in the first place.
That's because McClain maintains that she was with Syed at the local library at the same time the state alleged he was strangling Lee to death in a car in the parking lot of a nearby Best Buy.
Now, Syed has been granted a new trial, after a judge ruled that his attorneys were deficient because they failed to note the unreliability of cellphone tracking evidence cited by prosecutors.
But, if McClain were to testify in a new trial, her testimony could be met with new statements made by two sisters who were classmates of Syed's and McClain's at Woodlawn High School.
Officials wrote in court filings Monday that the sisters approached the attorney general's office this summer, after the judge ordered a new trial. The sisters gave sworn statements saying that McClain told them in 1999 that she would lie to help Syed.
The officials ask that the affidavits be used in court if McClain's alibi claim is introduced.
McClain tells WJZ that the sisters' claims are "complete nonsense."
