An End-Of-Summer Tradition, The Md. State Fair Begins

TIMONIUM, Md. (WJZ) -- The Maryland State Fair is celebrating 135 years. It's the perfect place to end the summer season, and soak in that last bit of fun.

The Maryland tradition attracts 500,000 visitors every year, WJZ's Tracey Leong reports.

"All kind of good times take place here," said Bob Shirley, horse show announcer.

From the rides to the food, the Maryland State Fair offers something for everyone.

"I love all the rides here!" said 4-year-old Jayden.

"Healthy type of fun," said Janice Palin.

"To make sure they have a good time right before they go back to school," said Leah Hamm.

Visitors also have an opportunity to view livestock, and maybe even catch a live birth.

"I'm an animal lover, and I just love all animals. And just to see it with its baby, it touches my heart," said Kim Miller.

Horse announcer Bob Shirley has been with the Maryland State Fair for 70 years. He says he's proud to see the transformation.

"A wonderful job of teaching people where their food comes from and what agriculture really is," said Shirley.

"The best thing here to me is seeing the people smiling and happy and having a good time," said Andy Cashman, general manager, Maryland State Fair.

The fair continues through Labor Day. For more info, CLICK HERE.
