Water Main Break Sends Water Shooting Into The Air In Woodlawn
WOODLAWN, Md. (WJZ) -- A busy intersection in Baltimore County was forced to close, as crews made emergency repairs on a massive water main break that sent water shooting dozens of feet into the air.
Towering over traffic lights just outside the Social Security Administration building, a water main break erupted Friday afternoon, bringing many to a standstill.
The call came in around 12:30 p.m. The Department of Public Works says a 12-inch main was the problem.
Video (above) shared online by Instagram user @naturallychefcat shows water gushing into the intersection of Woodlawn Drive and Security Boulevard.
"It was basically like a river going down the street," said Adam Capozzi, who works next door at a car dealership.
Some at the Social Security building first saw video in an email sent to employees.
"I'm telling you, it was over the top of this pole," said one employee.
Others, like Yasmin Samuels, work next door and saw it firsthand.
"Everyone says it sounded like an explosion," said Samuels. "But when I looked out the window, the water was already gushing out."
Crews were quickly able to shut off the water, but the damage was already done, leaving the road torn apart.
"The pavement or street, asphalt, has just sunk in," one spectator said.
Traffic was shut down for two hours at the intersection due to the break. All lanes have since been reopened.
DPW says it is still investigating the cause.
