Activists, Family Of Korryn Gaines To Hold Justice March In Baltimore

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Activists will join the family of Korryn Gaines for a march on Baltimore Saturday afternoon, according to People's Power Assembly spokeswoman Sharon Black.

Gaines was shot and killed by Baltimore County Police on August 1.

Police were there to serve arrest warrants for 23-year-old Gaines and her boyfriend, 39-year-old Kareem Kiean Courtney, and they say they ended up in a 7-hour armed standoff with Gaines.

She had a 12-gauge Mossberg shotgun, according to police, and her 5-year-old son was with her in the house.

It was shortly after 4 p.m., when Gaines pointed her gun and made verbal threats at the officers who were attempting to negotiate with her, that a tactical officer fired the first shot at her, according to police.

Gaines then returned fire, but no officers were struck.

Officers then fired back, hitting and killing Gaines. When officers went to render aid, they noticed that the 5-year-old boy, Gaines's son Kodi, was also struck. Kodi was hospitalized but only sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

"On Saturday, local and regional activists will join with the family of Korryn Gaines to make sure that her case and that of her son are not forgotten and receive the attention they deserve," according to the PPA news release.

"We want to make sure that the women victims of police terror garner as much attention from our movement as any of the other cases that we have protested around," says Rev. CD Witherspoon, candidate for Baltimore NAACP president. "It is crucial that we support her and her family."
