Another Record-setting Month for BWI Airport

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Another record setting month for BWI as millions of passengers come through its gates.

Ava-joye Burnett has more on what's making this local airport so popular.

For the 12th straight month, BWI has smashed its passenger record. The most recent data showed 2.3 million people either flew in or out of the airport in June.

"BWI itself remains very efficient and convenient for our travelers and our airline partners continue to offer excellent airfares which certainly are attractive for our customers," said BWI spokesperson Jonathan Dean.

With this surge of travelers, new updates are coming to the airport, many of which passengers can expect to see by year's end. Work is currently being done on a new passenger check point and new retail spaces are also in the works.

The airport attracts travelers from both near and far for its location and proximity to the nation's capital.

"It's good to have an airport that's easy to use and convenient and brings people to Baltimore," said BWI traveler Bill Marker.

And for locals like Becky Craig, "it's very close to our home in Pasadena, only 25 minutes away. Parking is pretty easy," she said.

BWI is also a hub for popular economy air carrier Southwest Airlines.

Airport officials also said international travel went up during the month of June, which was a boost for numerous airlines.

2015 was the best year on record for passenger travel through BWI, as 24 million people used the airport. And with four months left to go this year, airport officials say the strong growth continues.

Airport officials are examining additional projects like roadway improvements. If approved, these changes could happen before 2020.
