Police: Bandit With Taste for Fancy Cookies, Espresso Nabbed

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) — Police say a bandit with a taste for espresso and fancy cookies has been nabbed because he asked an officer for directions to a Connecticut pastry shop.

Stamford police Lt. Thomas Barcello tells the Stamford Advocate (http://bit.ly/2dykpKN ) that Donald Newman-Smith's face was covered with a bandanna when he robbed a convenience store on Monday, getting away with around $800.

Police say an investigator was responding to the convenience store later when Newman-Smith asked him how to get to the pastry shop. They say the investigator later recognized him as he watched surveillance footage of the robbery.

Officers went to the shop and found Newman-Smith sitting at an outside table, drinking an espresso with a dozen Pignoli (pin-YOH'-lee) cookies.

A message left at a phone listing for Newman-Smith hasn't been returned.
