Food, Community & Free Pumpkin Pies At Geresbeck's Market For Thanksgiving

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Touch football, free pumpkin pies and a local supermarket giving back to the community. It's all part of Thanksgiving in Middle River.

The touch football game in front of Geresbeck's supermarket started at 4:30 a.m. At 6 a.m. the doors opened and the first 100 people in line would get a free pumpkin pie and a gift card, but Jeremy Cook got there much, much earlier to be first.

"I got here at 1:30 this morning." But to him Thanksgiving means more than the free pumpkin pie "Thanksgiving means blessings and being surrounded by friends and family," he said.

"It means a lot because we all get together, and we just eat and reminisce over the years  and everything. Just catching up," said Geresbeck's shopper Joann Pettit, from Edgewood.

"I love my pumpkin pie. I come every year for the pie and stay in this long line," said Pettit.

And when you're waiting that early, you make friends in line real fast.

"We get down here and get in the mood. We meet new people, make new friends, just being in line, it's great," said Jackie Leahy, Geresbeck's shopper from Dundalk.

The Middle River tradition began 20 years ago, and now includes a $25 Geresbeck's gift card, provided by Delta Utility Services.

"Delta Utility Service came to us a few years ago and they wanted to find a way to give back to the community also. So, they purchased one hundred 25-dollar gift cards to Geresbeck's to be given away with the pumpkin pies," said John Stricker, Gerersbeck's supermarket.

"This is our way of giving something back to the community at this time of year," said Stricker.

Folks from as far away as Harford and Carroll Counties come to Middle River every year for the pumpkin pie giveaway and maybe pick up an eclair too.

"Happy thanksgiving!"
