Young Girl's Snow Cone Stand Raises Money for Ellicott City Business

BALTIMORE (WJZ)-- One small donation has meant the world to a business that lost everything in the Ellicott City flood this summer. It came from a girl who believed a small act could make a difference.

When massive flash flooding took over the streets of Ellicott City in July, homes and businesses were destroyed and two died. The damage was historic and heartbreaking.

"When the flood happened, I felt so sorry for these people I didn't know what to think," said Breana Ryerson. But Breana knew what to do. She would raise money for a business.

"We just made a snow cone. And I'm like what if we made a snow cone stand," said Ryerson.

She borrowed a snow cone machine and sold the flavored ice in her neighborhood. After a few hours she made $133.

And she knew exactly where the money would go - to the place where she had her birthday party - Suzie's Make-Up Studio on Main Street.

Every bit helps stores - many weren't sure if they'd ever re-open.

"For me it was like going through a loss," said Suzie's Make-Up Studio owner.

This was the push she needed.

"Everybody has so many memories on Main Street and one of them was you and your birthday party so thank you for getting me back in," the owner said.

Back in, just in time for the holidays. And the spirit of giving that goes along with it.

"It's kinda like helping someone you are giving someone something and they are going to be joyful and that makes you joyful," said Ryerson.

Breana says she's already planning her next fundraiser to help other business in Ellicott City rebuild.

Nearly all of the businesses on Main Street are back open.
