Baltimore Co. Officials Notified Of Intercepted Calls During Wiretap

TOWSON, Md. (WJZ/AP) — Several Baltimore County government officials say they've received notices this month from federal prosecutors saying their communications were intercepted as part of a wiretap investigation in 2013 and 2014.

WJZ obtained a copy of the March 8 notice that went out earlier this month to several members of both the county council and County Exectutive Kevin Kamenetz's staff.

Don Mohler,  Kamenetz's chief of staff, says he received a notice himself. He says some officials called the FBI after receiving the letter and were told that "their numbers were intercepted as part of the investigation into someone else." Mohler says Kamenetz did not receive one.

Who or what was being investigated is not stated in the notice.

Mohler stressed that staff has been assured they are not being investigated.

"They were very clear with us when we called them. They tell you are not the subject of the investigation," Mohler said.

In a statement an FBI spokesperson tells WJZ the law requires someone caught up in a wiretap investigation to be notified. That also includes people that may not have been the targets, but did speak to the person being investigated.

According to our media partner the Baltimore Sun, County Administrative Officer Fred Homan, Deputy Administrative Officer Donna Morrison and Department of Permits, Approvals and Inspections head Arnold Jablon are among those who got the notice.

FBI officials say the investigation is ongoing but would not comment any further.
