Maryland SPCA spokeswoman Tina Regester says "little Luca lost his battle with parvo. We're just devastated for him."

The Maryland SPCA released the following statement:

"It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of nine-week-old Luca's passing. Despite the around-the-clock, critical care and treatment he received, Luca was unable to win his battle against parvo.

"We are deeply saddened by his passing but are comforted in knowing that because of the community's support, the rapid response of our medical team, and the medical care he received at Pet+E.R. - Towson and Towson Veterinary Hospital, Luca was given every humane opportunity possible to get better.

"Without question, baby Luca was able to experience the feeling of being loved during his short life.

"As your Maryland SPCA, we remain committed to being a compassionate lifeline to pets like Luca who come through our doors needing life-saving medical care, and with you by our side, we will continue offering them every chance they deserve.

"Manny, who was also brought to the Maryland SPCA with parvo, is currently doing well as he continues to receive the life-saving treatment he needs for a chance to make a full recovery. Vaccinations offer the best protection for pets against devastating illnesses like parvo—ask your pet's vet if your pet is up-to-date with vaccinations."

"It's a virus that attacks the intestinal cells. It causes bloody diarrhea and mucus," PetER Medical Director Dr. Tanya Tag tells WJZ.

"It's a really aggressive virus they can die from it. They really need aggressive care."

Aggressive care their owners could not afford, so they gave the puppies to the Maryland SPCA.

"The Maryland SPCA really wants to help whoever we can help, and so when the puppies came to our door we wanted to do everything possible to make sure they were healthy," said Nichole Miller of the Maryland SPCA.
