There was a time when the only way many folks would drink tequila is if they could hide the taste with some salt to lick and a lime to suck. However, in recent years the sales of tequila have skyrocketed. This is the result of better tasting tequilas being introduced to the market and talented mixologists creating outstanding tequila cocktails. Here are five places in Baltimore were tequila is given the love it deserves and patrons can get tequila cocktails that are delicioso.

It is not just the tasty Venezuelan-inspired food that has put Alma Cocina Latina on many lists of top restaurants in Baltimore — it is also its cocktails. With a beverage program that embraces the richness of Caribbean and Latin countries, Alma knows tequila. Created by celebrated mixologist Aaron Joseph, Alma’s Margarita de Parchita is made with a combination of Patrón Silver, Patrón Citrónge Orange, and a passion fruit and jalapeño syrup. It was recently selected by Patron as a finalists for its 2018 Margarita of the Year competition.

Baltimore’s Remington neighborhood, which The Baltimore Sun says has a reputation for “well-crafted food and drinks,” is where you will find Clavel. This Mexican-inspired restaurant is best known for its selection of mezcals, tequila’s smokey cousin, but stocks some excellent artisanal tequilas. Its El Chichon is made with Sembra Valles High Proof blanco tequila, Sotol Por Siempre (another cousin of tequila), cherry tomato reduction, pink peppercorn, Dopo Teatro vermouth, Bruto Americano, celery, Peychaud bitter, and fresh fennel. This drink is a work of art.

In addition to its 1/2 ounce flights that are perfect for exploring its vast offering, its has some top-notch margaritas and cocktails. A must try is its  Paloma made with Jose Cuervo Tradicional, agave nectar, fresh lime juice, and grapefruit soda. It pairs perfectly with Blue Agave’s house made chips and salsa.

The seats at R Bar are some of the most coveted real estate in Baltimore. Located in the heart of R House food court, this creative watering hole draws its patrons in with a well-curated selection of seasonal cocktails, craft beers and wines. Its beverage director Amie Ward is a fan of tequila and usually includes at least one tequila-based cocktail on her every changing menu. Recently seen on the menu was the Little Chrissy made with La Pitaya Tequila, Blue Curacao, lime jam, Shrub District Blueberry Basel, and some Blue Raspberry AirHeads candy.
