Sen. Ben Cardin Wins Third Term In U.S. Senate

BALTIMORE (AP) — Sen. Ben Cardin, Democrat incumbent, has been reelected to the U.S. Senate for Maryland.

Cardin, a fixture in Maryland politics since the 1970s, ran for his third term in office against two newcomers.

Montgomery County business executive Neal Simon, who ran as an independent and Towson University political professor Tony Campbell was the Republican in the race.

Cardin said Tuesday he was confident he would maintain his seat and was looking at other big races nationally.

Cardin arrived at his watch party just moments after the polls closed Tuesday.

"I'm flattered by the comments I heard, people very pleased that I would stand up to the president when he did things that were against the values of America," Cardin said after he was declared the projected winner early Tuesday night.
