BALTIMORE COUNTY, Md. (WJZ) — A carjacking suspect was struck and killed by a police car after jumping out of the stolen car.
Baltimore County Police said officers responded to the 3400 block of Merle Drive in Baltimore County, near the city line, around 4 p.m. for a report of a carjacking.
According to police, a Millford Mill pizza delivery driver told officers that three armed suspects, all men and one under 18, threatened him and stole his blue Ford Fiesta.
A short time later, officers saw the stolen car taking a joyride down Liberty Road near Essex Road.
The officers tried to stop the car, but the suspects continued to flee into city limits.
Police then saw the suspects throw a handgun from the car on Liberty Road at Northern Parkway. Officers recovered the gun.
Three suspects then jumped out of the car on Northern Parkway at Highgate Drive.
“The three suspects did try to flee up Highgate Road, one of the suspects was struck by one of the police cars that was coming into the area, responding to the pursuit. Right now that suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene,” said Baltimore County Cpl. Shawn Vinson.
One of the suspects was struck in the roadway by an a police car responding to the pursuit and was declared dead on the scene.
Another suspect was arrested and a third suspect continued to flee.
One of the male suspects is under 18, but police won’t say the age of the the suspect who was pinned under the police car and died.
“There will be an autopsy done by the medical examiner’s office. And then at the same time, Baltimore city police will lead a crash investigation to see what lead up to the suspect being struck by the police car,” Vinson added.
Baltimore Police did assist county police with the crash scene. They are also leading the crash investigation.
Police say body camera footage will be part of the investigation, but there is no dash cam.
None of the involved officers were injured during the incident.
The officer is not being placed on leave at this point, while county police wait for crash investigation results.
