BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The U.S. Census Bureau estimates Baltimore’s population every year and finalizes it every ten years.

The last count finished in July 2018 and estimates more than 7,300 people left the city.

The largest one-year loss since 2001, bringing Baltimore’s population down to 602, 495 people. For City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke, the numbers are disappointing.

“I think it’s a shame and I’m sorry to see it.”

People move on for a lot of reasons, and they have for a number of years. But the prime driver can be traced back to protests over the death of Freddie Gray while in police custody, and the rioting that followed.

Ever since then, Baltimore’s murder rate has soared, and the violence fueled by on-going drug wars has motivated many to leave.

“The population will come back as soon as we get all this violence under control,” said Clarke. “and I have faith our new police commissioner is the right person to help us do that.”

There have been new arrivals. The Census Bureau estimates nearly 2,000 immigrants from other countries have settled in Baltimore and the Downtown Partnership of Baltimore sees new residential buildings and the rehabbed rowhouses of places like Canton and Fells Point as signs the downtown population is poised for growth.

  1. Get rid of all the democratic corruption, violent crimes, murders and the ILLEGAL aliens and maybe people would stay, not that hard to figure out! It’s pretty obvious…

  2. You liberal democrats are the direct blame for the past and ongoing demise of this city! Democrats have been in control for years, take a good hard look at how the liberals have brought this city DOWN to it’s current evident obvious destruction! As if that’s not bad enough now we are dealing with the corrupt city govt in CITY HALL from top to bottom. There is your answer why good people are leaving in droves, so keep voting in those democratic liberals and in a short amount of time you can take a bulldozer to this city and call it a day because that’s all it will be worth!

Start killing the killers and law abiding people will come back. Simple. False hope going downtown. No place is safe anymore within the city

  4. Two comments. Both true, first one for good humor.

So this article implies that parking is and is going to get easier? 😉

The additional issue that none have so far mentioned is property and income taxes. Why would anyone pay the premium to live in the city?? Only reason I can think of is if you worked there too and wanted a shorter commute.

The problem is that the crime is coming with it…..i’m happy if people want to flee the crime and bullets and move to the county but for God sake pull your pants up and leave your city ways in the city!

  6. I know why!! They are trying to escape the corrupt Baltimore city DEMOCRATIC govt!

  7. Bill Smiths says:

Baltimore City in 1970 had almost one million people living there, now six hundred thousand which I believe is not correct and its far less. We know why people are leaving, people just don’t want or are to scared to say that Baltimore has a black welfare problem, I have seen the problem firsthand when I lived in the city. The truth of the matter is those people destroy neighborhoods, its proven that section 8 housing wrecks working class communities. If any liberal wants to disagree with what I lived through and seen with my own eyes, then how about you move into a nice” chateau” up on North Avenue and lets see how long you last.
