Former Shock Trauma Security Guard Charged With Rape Held Without Bail

BALTIMORE (WJZ) — A former Shock Trauma security guard accused of rape is being held without bail.

Richard Barnes appeared in court Thursday and asked for a private attorney.

During his appearance, Barned pleaded to Judge William Dunn that he needed to be home with his family.

The court, however, held him without bail, calling him a danger to the community after allegations that he posed as a police officer and raped a woman in Charles Village.

According to the charging documents, the victim was in a Lyft headed to Charles Village on June 1. The Lyft driver allegedly assaulted the victim, and then pulled over in an alley to continue the assault.

That's when Barnes showed up, identified himself as a police officer, and demanded that the victim get into his car. Police say Barnes then drove the victim to another location and raped her.

Police failed to mention the Lyft driver at a press conference earlier this week, and since then, have refused to publicly talk about the case.

They will not say why the Lyft driver has not been charged.

The prosecution in the case said: "The facts, in this case, are horrific and the state is asking the defendant be held without bail to protect the victim and the public."
