Thousands Left Without Power Across Baltimore During Heatwave Friday Night

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Thousands were left without power in the Baltimore area on Friday night.

As a result, many people felt the effects of the recent heatwave.

In Fells Point, senior citizens had no power.

"This is a deadly situation," one resident said. "It's a very serious situation."

At one point, there were more than 2,400 outages in the city. BGE said that they're working to restore power to those still in the dark before conducting an investigation into what caused the outages.

In Little Italy, businesses struggled during one of the busiest nights of the week.

"It is a Friday night which is the second busiest night of the week," a restaurant owner told WJZ "I'm a little concerned it doesn't continue into tomorrow night."

Elsewhere, one of America's largest festivals debuted in Baltimore- Artscape. But thousands of people still made it out to the event despite the hot temperatures.

Mist tents and dozens of food and drink stations kept people hydrated as the heat index hit triple digits across the area.

Baltimore's Health Department has extended a Code Red Extreme Heat Alert through Monday.

"I try to come out after five so I don't get most of the heat in the day," William Hollie, of Baltimore, said. "But I'll maintain."

The important message is for everyone that this kind of heat is potentially dangerous for everyone.
