Police: Boy Who Fell 11 Stories Had Pushed On Window Screen

TAKOMA PARK, Md. (AP) -- Police say a 2-year-old boy critically injured in an 11-story fall from a Maryland apartment building had climbed onto a night stand near an open window and pushed on the screen.

Citing a Takoma Park police statement, news outlets report the Monday fall has been deemed an accident. Police say the boy's father was home at the time. The toddler fell just after awaking from a nap.
Authorities said the child's fall was cushioned by mulch and ivy that was just inches from a concrete sidewalk and parking lot.

Montgomery County Fire spokesman Pete Piringer says this should serve as a reminder that safety devices should be used on windows in households with children and pets.

The boy remained hospitalized in critical condition as of Tuesday.
