ANNAPOLIS, Md. (WJZ) — A group of Marylanders plan to protest in Annapolis Saturday to reopen the state after Gov. Larry Hogan put the state under “stay at home” order on March 30 due to the coronavirus.

The group, known as Reopen Maryland, plans to protest downtown around noon. They want the governor to reopen Maryland by May 1.

“We are the strongest country on the planet and have put a man on the moon, there is no compelling reason why we can’t protect the sick and vulnerable and get our economy back to work,” a Facebook event says.

The group says more than 13,000 Marylanders want the state to “return to normalcy.” They say thousands have signed a petition to reopen the state.

“Besides being a loss of jobs and vital tax revenue, a shuttered business is a shattered dream. We can preserve those dreams AND protect our citizens,” said Spokesperson Caryn Abbott, of Pokomoke City, in a statement.

In a press conference earlier this week, Gov. Hogan said he was starting to make plans on the state’s recovery post-coronavirus, however, he said the state;s COVID-19 numbers continue to rise and ordered people to start wearing masks while shopping and using public transit starting Saturday morning at 7 a.m.

Hogan attended a 3 p.m. call with President Donald Trump Thursday, where Trump outlined procedures for reopening states.

The President said governors will have the say in how fast to recover.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer says protests can lead to extension of stay-at-home orders

“The shutdown is a broadly destructive solution to a problem that could be solved with far more targeted approaches,” said Spokesperson Kelly Ulrich, of Glen Burnie. “Meanwhile, our most vulnerable citizens – children with special education needs, small business owners, people with mental health conditions, and Marylanders who live paycheck to paycheck are suffering in unimaginable ways.”

The group would need to get a permit through the city of Annapolis to protest.

I don’t know why Hogan say’s he is a Republican. I think when these demonrats say something to him he pee’s his pants.

I bet there isn’t a single wrinkle on your brain.

    2. Thomas Andrews says:

“pee’s” ??? seriously, dude, a middle school student could correct that error, LOL! I suggest you and your buddies worried about “loosing” your freedom as one sign said take the time to open middle school spelling and grammar books and learn to correctly write English.

Hogan is doing the right thing! I never voted for him and seldom agree with him, but in this case, he is acting in the best interest of the state……….except for saying liquor and gun stores are “necessary”.

  3. Tami says:

I believe Governor Hogan is doing a fantastic job. I support him fully. I also think these protesters don’t fully understand this pandemic.

  4. eddie says:

These people are idiots who clearly don’t care about humanity. Mr. Hogan stay on track, you’re doing great.

  5. “The group would need to get a permit through the city of Annapolis to protest.”
    You think so eh?

  6. Tony Ristaino says:

The group has the right to protest, petition the Government and peaceably assemble.First Amendment:Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
Please note the above does not say “unless there is a virus”.The people can also go to church.People can use common sense lake stay a few feet apart, wash their hands and quarantine the at risk voluntarily. Shutting down businesses, robbing people of their ability to make a living, feed their families, pay their mortgages is not the way to go.Robbing the young, those in their 30s and 40s of their future to save those with pre-existing conditions in their 80s is totally unfair.God Bless, peace and good health to all!

The problem is the great number of people do not voluntarily distance. Parks have had to take down equipment and lock basketball courts for example, to stop the spread of the virus. The bars were PACKED for St. Patricks Day despite people being aware of person to person transmission, for example. Yes, people are suffering economically, much of my family is out of work but that is just the way it is. That is reality, as brutal as it is.

This a public health crisis. And it’s not just 80 year olds that are dying, please pay attention. As for people going to church, of all things why in the world would you have to do that? God is everywhere. As for the protests planned, sure people have a right to gather, but as evidenced by the protests in other states, very few were voluntarily not gathering, let alone voluntarily social distancing. The videos and photos of recent protests clearly showed that people were not doing that. I blame people like that for disease spread and resulting restrictions. Get with the temporary program!!

As the owner, I reject the implication that Max’s Taphouse, who voluntarily closed prior to the Governor’s order, stands with these protests. While I give WJZ the benefit of the doubt that the footage was used as standard background b-roll, it does not reflect our opinion on this matter. We stand with Governor Hogan’s recommendations for public safety and look forward to a time when all businesses can reopen in accordance with guidance from health officials.

Keep it shutdown for more months. I’m still working and loving the open highways. Keep my drive clear. Keep politicians paychecks going even though they stay in their homes doing nothing,. That’s the way it should be.

  9. Mike Lastort says:

These ReOpenMD idiots are members of a death cult. This disease is deadly. The worst thing we can do right now is end the lock down.

FWIW, it’s pretty easy to join their Facebook group and tell them they’re stupid. They’ll ban you, but before they do you can get a few good digs in.
