Former Maryland Hospital Worker Charged With Sex Assault Of Unconscious Patient

EASTON, Md. (AP) — A former Maryland hospital worker has been charged with sexually assaulting an unconscious patient.

Easton police said Travis K. Brooks, 35, of Trappe, Maryland, was arrested Tuesday on charges of second-degree rape, third- and fourth-degree sex offense, abuse of a vulnerable adult and second-degree assault.

Authorities began an investigation in April after Easton police were called to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center for a theft report, news outlets reported.

Officers were told that a patient had money stolen from her wallet while having a procedure done. Investigators identified Brooks as a suspect and subsequently learned he had been taking photos of patients' credit cards, according to police.

After executing several search warrants, detectives found a video that police say was recorded by Brooks in December 2019 and shows him sexually assaulting a patient who was unconscious.

Detectives were able to identify the victim and confirm that Brooks carried out and recorded the assault, police said.

In addition to the sexual offenses, Brooks is also charged with misdemeanor drug possession and several counts of theft.

Brooks, who has a long arrest record and was charged with assault in July 2019 in a separate case, was being held without bond on the sex charges pending a hearing Wednesday afternoon.

It was not immediately clear whether he had an attorney who could comment on the charges.
