WASHINGTON (WJZ) — The Metropolitan Police Department has released body-worn camera footage in the fatal shooting of 18-year-old Deon Kay. Kay, a Black man, was shot by a DC police officer when he fled from police Wednesday afternoon as police were investigating reports of a man with a gun in the area.

Police said Kay “brandished a firearm,” moments before he was shot in the chest. His death prompted protests amid increased nationwide and local scrutiny over police tactics.

The late-night face-off between police and dozens of protesters was outside a city police station.

“During the foot pursuit, one of the suspects brandished a firearm. In response, an officer discharged their firearm one time, striking the suspect,” the MPD statement said.

Another man was also fleeing responding officers at the time, police said. Marcyelle Smith, 19, also of southeast DC, also allegedly had a handgun on him. Smith was arrested and charged for Carrying a Pistol Without a License.

Deonte Brown, 18, of Southeast, DC was arrested and charged with No Permit.

Kay was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. The police statement included pictures of the handgun they say Kay had been carrying, as well of the gun of another of his companions who was arrested.

The local Black Lives Matter affiliate called for immediate protests outside the MPD’s 7th District headquarters, stating in a tweet, “DC police murdered a Black man today.”

Later Wednesday night, videos posted on social media showed dozens of enraged protesters jostling with a line of police officers, who used bicycles to help form a barrier in front of the station.

The shooting happened in the 200 block of Orange Street in southeast DC around 3:49 p.m. Wednesday.

It comes as police killings of Black people have sparked nationwide protests and calls for sweeping police reform, prompting local efforts by the D.C. Council to bring greater transparency to such incidents.

In June, following the killing of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis, the council passed emergency legislation requiring the MPD to release any body camera footage from any fatal shootings or use-of-force incidents within five days. The department must also release the names of the officers involved.

In July, the city released body camera footage from three separate fatal incidents dating back to 2018.

This case remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact MPD at (202) 727-9099.

Just goes to show that no matter how much proof there is that the Police were justified and doing their jobs to protect the public, BLM will send their terrorist troops to the streets. I say just let the criminals and thugs go, sooner or later the street will take i’ts justice out on them .Drug dealers, gang members and thugs who are killed by the hundreds in Baltimore every year by each other are a one mention story on the news. No one marches or riots for them, no one ” says their name”, just as it should be. Let them all wipe each other out and let the Police protect the citizens who appreciate what they do.

  3. Steve Swallow says:

Very happy he’s dead. Pull a gun on a cop you die. Good job cops. Note : Instagram immediately pulled a video that this a-hole perp posted showing him and his a-hole friend both holding Glocks with laser lights on them so they can shoot people dead in the dark. Again let’s celebrate his death. One more totally useless loser off the street.

  4. Frank says:

BLM is a terrorist organization. Yet the democrats support them. They are protesting over a piece of trash who would shoot a person of color in a heart beat and not thing twice. But black on black crime isnt the problem they say. So honestly if black folks dont care about their own people mass murdering their own people why should the rest of us care?

burn loot murder, i’m sure you can find something to riot about

  6. Will says:

Please stop using the phrase ” the killing of George Floyd by police officers in Minneapolis”. There has been no trial and no proven ‘killing’. The autopsy already shows heart failure as the cause of death and the toxicology report proves over double the lethal dose of fentanyl, which in fact would lead directly to heart failure. The career criminal was already screaming about ‘I can’t breathe’ long before the police had him on the ground, further backing the fentanyl proof. As for this guy in DC who pulled a gun on cops – que sera sera, live by the sword and die by the sword.

  7. BLM is counterproductive says:

Comply with a cop’s orders and you won’t get shot. Morons. Maybe if black people had responsible parents to tell them this, 90% of these tragedies would be prevented. Suicide by cop. Send the militia groups to the streets. Time to clean up the trash.

  8. BG says:

Those rioting and burning and looting and assaulting don’t give a rat’s behind whether the ‘trigger’ for their idiocy is justified or not. They will push Marxist stupidity whether there is a trigger or not. They are childish… incompetent… ill-educated… maladjusted… infantile… self-absorbed… losers. They always will be losers, and they know that… they simply desire to flip over the game board, because they know they are incapable of success within a responsible adult’s world. The response? Simply apprehend and incarcerate, and then demand that they do something productive in prison in exchange for food and water.

  9. King Julian says:

looks like the DC chapter of burn loot murder shut up real quick, hard to deny a gun when its 20 feet away and charging at you.

    1. Joe G says:

I wonder if BLM will come out and say what a good job this Officer did by taking out this thug criminal and protecting the rest of the citizens of DC? I’m sure he saved many more black lives by eliminating this piece of trash…. imagine how many people would have been victims of this thug?..

  10. chrissfarmer says:

He CLEARLY had a gun, was facing police and was clearly a CREDIBLE threat. This shooting WAS JUSTIFIED. BLM is about the killing of UNARMED people, coincidentally almost always Black, who are not a threat to police when murdered because they were not armed and were shot in the back or killed while in handcuffs with a police knee on their necks as they screamed “I can’t breathe!”

Peaceful protests are a Constitutional right. Looting and burning are crimes and are not. A lot of those who loot are just opportunists and have nothing to do with any protest, the same as people who loot after natural disasters. BLM does NOT support committing crimes, only peaceful protests. Each incident is unique, this one has nothing to do with the murder of others. This shooting WAS justified. Show me a police body cam of George Floyd pointing a gun at police while he has handcuffed face down on the ground. Go ahead, I’ll wait. THAT is what BLM is about, folks.

    1. Joe G says:

Then why did BLM send their goons out to protest/riot over this thugs death? Why do they not come out publicly against the looting and rioting? Why do they not condemn the violence and attacks on innocent people who are just trying to get to work or eat a meal? Go ahead, I’ll wait…..

  11. blackspeak says:

This appears to be reasonable, given that the suspect was armed…The reaction time for the LEO was incident to the suspect reaching behind his back… That was already a bad move in confronting LEO…When LEOs lose sight of your hands, the chances of you being shot, increase dramatically…

  12. Tyree says:

The real problem is black folks never want to accept the role these individuals play in their own demise. that’s because they are trained by the white liberal to believe no matter what they are victims. If the officer who shot this foll was black, we wouldn’t hear not one peep out of the white liberal media.

    1. Joe G says:

You are 100% correct. It does not matter what led to the situation they are in, only who is to blame (or who they are programmed to blame) when they are shot or taken down by Police. Always a victim, always someones else’s fault they are in that situation. I have always heard the black people I work with say ” I’d rather ask for forgiveness than permission”……that’s the most ignorant way to live life, do as you please then say you’re sorry?? I guess if forgiveness isn’t given, then the blame game starts, now along with the race card. Also correct…black officers involved, barely a peep ….it does not fit the “white man devil” narrative of MSM and BLM…..
