BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- Baltimore County Police were attempting to arrest two robbery suspects at a Baltimore City hotel when a detective fired at one of the suspects when they allegedly drove at the officer, according to police.

Police said Baltimore County detectives tracked robbery suspects to a hotel in downtown Baltimore.

They were working to bring the suspects into custody and were waiting to pull over the suspects as they left the hotel.

Police said, as the suspects came out, one ran back inside the hotel and another got into a vehicle and allegedly rammed into the back of a police vehicle when the suspect saw officers in the area.

As another detective approached the suspect in the car and ordered them out of the car, the suspect drove at the detective, according to police.

Police said that's when the officer fired a weapon at the driver. The driver then fled the area, according to police.

"That detective discharged their service weapon, the suspect vehicle then continued, bounced off of the silver vehicle you see behind me, and went north on S. Calvert Street," Sgt. Vicky Warehime, of the Baltimore County Police Department, said.

Chopper 13 was over the scene.

The shooting, although in Baltimore City, did not involve Baltimore City Police officers.

Police don't know whether the suspect was struck by the gunfire.

County police officials said the officers identified themselves while engaging with the suspects.

One suspect is in custody and another suspect is at large. The suspect vehicle was recovered.

People who live and work in the downtown area said the news was shocking.

"It's startling," Kate Wood, of Baltimore, said. "It's something you definitely don't ever want to hear about, but definitely not in your neighborhood."

"I just wish that it all could stop and that we could come together and become a better community and a better city," Devon Gross, of Baltimore, told WJZ.

The Baltimore County Police detective involved in the shooting is on a standard administrative leave for the duration of this investigation, police said.
