Best 2014 Veterans Day Events In Baltimore

Each year, November 11 is the day we set aside to recognize and honor the many men and women, both the known and unknown, who have served and/or sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we enjoy as United States citizens. Ceremonies occur all over the country as we pause for a moment just to say thank you. The day is usually marked by various parades and tributes. Here is a listing of events that will occur this year in the Baltimore area.

This event is a tribute to veterans who served in World War II. A portion of the proceeds from the ticket sales goes to assist the National Guard. Music will be provided by the Bumper Jackson Band. A dance class will be held at 7 p.m. and a good time is expected to be had as the brave men and women who fought in the war are honored. Tickets are available.

This Veterans of Foreign War Post honors the men and women of the Armed Forces with its All Service Ball. The gala is scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2014 from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets are available and attendees are invited to come out for a really good time.

Located in the northwestern portion of Baltimore County, this cemetery offers an annual Veterans Service beginning at 11 a.m. The service usually lasts, according to the office secretary, for 45 minutes. There is a band as well as a veteran as speaker. Sponsored by the Maryland Department of Veteran Affairs, the service, which honors the men and women who have given their lives, is free and open to the public.

Located in downtown Baltimore, the memorial serves all veterans of the state of Maryland. According to the website, it is "a place of remembrance for fallen soldiers." To honor them, there is usually a parade that takes place at 9 a.m. The parade processional goes from The Washington Monument in Mount Vernon down to City Hall. After that, a ceremony sponsored by the Baltimore City Veterans Commission is held at 11 a.m., during which a wreath is placed at the War Memorial. The event is usually attended by the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legions organizations. The event is free and open to the public

"For Whom It Stands: The Flag and the American People"

The Reginald F. Lewis Museum, located in downtown Baltimore, is currently featuring an exhibit from now until February 2015. According to Terry Taylor, museum employee, the exhibit is entitled, "For Whom It Stands: The Flag and the American People" and is designed to be an interactive exhibit in which the meaning of the flag to diverse groups is showcased. The exhibit features music, artwork and oral history of other people in America, both veterans and non-veterans. The oral history aspect of the program features nine Marylanders telling the story of what the flag means to them. In addition, the museum will have a participatory role in the annual Veterans Day ceremonies at the Baltimore City War Memorial event on November 11, 2014 at 1 p.m. The program, "O Say Can You Feel: Stories Inspired by National Blacks," will feature music and oral histories, accompanied by Powerpoint visuals, of various people.
