Best Upcoming Museum Exhibits In Baltimore

As spring turns into summer, it's time to get out of the house and start engaging. One activity worth considering is museum exhibits that will be opening up for summer. Eager to attract summer vacationers, museums will be throwing open the doors and rolling out the special activities for those interested in opening their minds. Check out some of these upcoming activities and get ready to participate in some out-of-the-ordinary entertainment.

Americans are becoming increasingly aware of Asian art and culture. The Baltimore Museum Of Art would like bringing this rich culture to Baltimore for the enjoyment of all. This is not just a series of paintings though. Participants will see many aspects of Asian culture, from the music performed by the Washington Guzheng Society, to hands-on art for adults, teenagers, and children. This includes live demonstrations of calligraphy by world-renowned calligraphy artist John Wang. Other activities include making dragon puppets, origami, and drawing manga for kids and teenagers. Show up early and enjoy the morning meditation and end the day with T'ai Chi. Both practices are held in the peaceful sculpture garden at the museum.

The Islamic Empire has been a large and substantial reigning force for over a thousand years. More than just a religion, it was an empire and a way of life that generations lived in. This vast culture, which once stretched from the Bay of Bengal to the Mediterranean, yielded its share of art, literature, poetry, and music. Now, for the first time, The Walters Art Museum will feature an international loan of art in all media showing the lives of people in this culture. Come see this exhibit for the three months it will be here to see, between November 2015 and January 2016.

You might recall seeing an old movie set in a more nostalgic era, with elderly people sitting on porches of general stores playing checkers, friendly grocers waiving at equally friendly truck drivers who were hand pumping their gas. Among these people were hand painted signs. These signs are practically gone but they are not lost. The Baltimore Museum of Industry will be opening an exhibit exploring the science behind crafting these beautiful works of art which were largely taken for granted.

Bring your child to Port Discovery any time through September 2015 and let them enjoy a one-of-a-kind Lego experience. They may build their own castle, no matter their age. Port Discovery provides giant foam blocks for toddlers, medium plastic blocks for small children, and regular Lego blocks for older kids. Explore their pre-made Lego castle, including a throne room and hidden tunnels. Construct and then destroy castles with catapults and more. Port Discovery will sneak in some education about medieval castles, architecture, and physics without your kid even realizing it.

Shortly after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, Arthur Mitchell, who was then the only African American member of the New York City Ballet, formed the Dance Theater of Harlem in a church basement. Since the begging the Dance Theater of Harlem has been going strong. Attend the Reginald F. Lewis Museum anytime until August to explore the rich history of this ground-breaking dance group. The exhibit includes a number of costumes used during the history of the theater's performances as well as other notable memorabilia.
