BLOG: Friedgen Move About Dollars....And Sense

I don't think Maryland handled the Friedgen ouster particularly well, but I'm not sure there was a good way to handle it.  The new A.D. Kevin Anderson needed to see more before committing to Friedgen, and with only one year left on his deal, there was no way to bring Friedgen back with half of his staff, maybe more, out the door with James Franklin to Vanderbilt.  Did Fridge deserve better?  Sure, but he made $2 million, and the university has to cover that nut and then some. They weren't doing it, because, while Fridge won, he generated no buzz for the program. Attendance was down, suites were unsold, and that's something the new A.D. doesn't get 10 years to fix. Now he better make an impact hire.  He probably gets one chance to fix the football program.  If he blows it, he might have Friedgen or Gary kind of longevity at Maryland.
