Bay Foundation To Offer Tips On Underwater Grasses

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- The Chesapeake Bay Foundation is promoting a homegrown solution to promote a healthy bay.

The foundation is teaching residents how to grow underwater grasses in home grow kits. Later this spring, the foundation will help volunteers plant the underwater grasses in the James River.

The bay advocacy group is sponsoring a workshop on Saturday in downtown Richmond with a slide presentation, some hands-on instruction and seeds to nurture at home.

Underwater grasses are critical to the health of the Chesapeake Bay. They filter the water, provide habitat for marine life and waterfowl and oxygenate the water.

Only about one-quarter of the bay's original underwater grasses remain.
