Md. Drunken Boating Crackdown Part Of U.S. Program
ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Maryland Natural Resources Police say they will be cracking down on drunken boating this weekend.
Police say they will be participating in Operation Dry Water, a national program to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking while boating. In addition to NRP officers, the Coast Guard and local law enforcement agencies will be looking for alcohol violations, targeting areas where boating and drinking has been a problem in the past.
Natural Resources Police say sun, wind and water can cause fatigue that is magnified when drinking and can impair judgment. The maximum penalty for operating a vessel while impaired by alcohol is a $1,000 fine and a year in jail for the first offense.
