Charities Seek To Raise Millions In D.C., Md., Va.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nonprofit groups in the mid-Atlantic region are challenging at least 35,000 donors to support their favorite regional charities in early November.

Organizers on Thursday announced the first "Give to the Max Day" for charities in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia. It will be held Nov. 9 with the goal of raising $3 million or more.

Terri Lee Freeman, president of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region, says any charity or nonprofit group can join the effort and create a website to raise money online through social media. She says it's a new way to kick off the holiday giving season.

Freeman says the effort is modeled on an initiative in Minnesota that raised $14 million for charities in one day.
