Patapsco Dam To Become Oyster Reef
ELLICOTT CITY, Md. (AP) -- Concrete from a dam removed from the Patapsco River in Ellicott City is heading to the mouth of the Chester River.
The Chesapeake Bay Foundation says the concrete will be used to form a two-acre oyster reef. The concrete is to be placed in the river this week and a few days later, four million young oysters, known as spat, are to be planted on the new reef.
The dam was removed from the river near Ellicott City because it was inhibiting fish habitat, and will now become habitat for oysters, which help clean bay water by filter feeding. Concrete has been used for oyster reefs before, but the Chesapeake Bay Foundation says that this is the first time it has been used in that part of the bay.
