Former Md. Treasurer Richard Dixon Has Died

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) -- Former Maryland Treasurer Richard Dixon has died. He was 74.

Treasurer Nancy Kopp announced Dixon's death in a news release on Thursday.

Kopp says Dixon, the state's first African-American treasurer, died following a stroke earlier this week.

Dixon served as a member of the Carroll County Board of Education. He also was a member of the House of Delegates before becoming treasurer.

He served as treasurer from 1996 until 2002.
