Md. AG FIles Objection To Sale Of Sparrows Point

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Maryland's attorney general is objecting to the proposed sale of the Sparrows Point steel mill by RG Steel.

Attorney General Doug Gansler filed the objection Tuesday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Delaware, saying the proposed sale order is silent on an environmental consent decree covering the plant site outside Baltimore. Gansler notes that negotiations are ongoing and the state has not been able to review the actual sales documents, but the state was facing a Wednesday deadline to file such objections and was reserving its right to object.

Previous owners of the plant had entered into an agreement with state and federal regulators covering environmental cleanup at the plant. Gansler says the agreement notes that any transfer of the property requires that terms of the decree be met.
