Police Shoot Man During Confrontation

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Authorities say Prince George's County police shot and critically wounded a man during a confrontation along the Washington-Maryland border.

Police say the shooting occurred about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday in the 800-block of Southern Avenue, which forms the boundary between southeast Washington and the Oxon Hill area of the county.

Police say the officers were called to the area for reports of a man firing gunshots in the area. Authorities say officers approached the man and demanded that he put his gun down but the man fired several shots. Police say the officers fired back at the man.

The man was taken to a hospital with critical injuries.

Two officers have been placed on routine administrative leave while D.C. police investigate the shooting.
