Maryland MVA Releases Android App To Test Drivers

BALTIMORE (WJZ) -- A new Android app to test drivers is now available from Maryland's Motor Vehicle Administration.

As Tim Williams shows us, practicing is just a cell phone away.

It's a mobile app that makes it easier to test your driving knowledge.

"We are releasing an app that's available on the Android platform. It's our driver test tutorial," said Buel Young, spokesperson, Maryland MVA.

The test is currently on its website but the Maryland MVA is using today's newest technology to reach the majority of new drivers taking the test.

"The app for the Android platform is available through the Google Playstore and you just simple go to the Google Playstore and download the app. It's free of charge. We already have released a version for the iPhone," Young said.

More than 100,000 users have tried the iPhone app successfully but currently about 50 percent of first-time takers of the knowledge test fail. So while new drivers are the main target, the DMV says newer laws and recommendations mean many experienced motorists can benefit from a refresher.

"One way to prevent accidents is being prepared," Young said. "We're trying to reach them where they're at and they're using these mobile devices."

The Maryland Practice Driving Test apps were developed by a self-funded e-government service at no charge to the MVA.
