Capital Bikeshare Expansion Stalling

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The expansion of the Capital Bikeshare program is slowing. District officials say they have not been able to get needed equipment from a supplier.

Department of Transportation officials have said they would add 54 bike share stations this fall. However, department spokesman John Lisle hold The Washington Post that some stations will be ready but all 54 stations will not be installed by the end of the year as planned.

The system launched in 2010 in the District, Arlington and Alexandria has about 175 stations and has struggled to keep up with demand at times. The expansion delay has also raised questions about whether supplier Alta Bicycle Share can keep up with growing demand from cities for bike-share programs.
